Councilmember Ali Hawkinson Receives Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership

Just one month after completing her Certificate of Municipal Leadership, Councilmember Ali Hawkinson has now received her Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.

AWC’s Certificate of Municipal Leadership program recognizes city and town elected officials for accomplishing training in four core areas:
• Roles, responsibilities and legal requirements
• Public sector resource management
• Community planning and development
• Effective local leadership

Those who earn the advanced certificate continue to strive for excellence by attending conferences and trainings, serving their community, and further developing leadership skills. To earn the Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership, Hawkinson completed more than 60 hours of training credits and demonstrated community service.

“Cities and towns around the state are continually transforming in light of changing laws and the need to meet new challenges and opportunities,” said AWC Chief Executive Officer Peter B. King.

“Our Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership recognizes mayors and councilmembers who continue to enhance the tools they need today to understand the legal landscape, plan for the future, manage their resources, and foster strong relationships. Purchase a Tile in the New Star Park Picnic Shelter

UPDATE – Purchase Deadline May 14th, 2021

In summer 2021, the City will be constructing a Picnic Shelter adjacent to Star Park. This facility will include picnic tables, a large countertop and sink area with running water and artistic features that match the unique character of Star Park.

The base of the sink area will be covered with 4 x 8 ceramic tiles (picture above, equal to about the size of an average brick). These tiles are now available for purchase.

  • These tiles will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. If we receive your order after the tiles have been sold, we will return your funds.
  • Cost will be $50 per tile.
  • Other opportunities, including sponsorship of picnic tables, will be available at a later time for local businesses.

To purchase a tile, please print and complete this form (one form per tile) with check or money order made out to “City of Ferndale.” Printed forms are also available at the front door of City Hall.

City Offices Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday

City Hall and the Police Station will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday, although first responders are always available when you call 911. City employees will be reachable by phone and email, as usual, once again on Monday, November 30th.

We urge everyone to make safe and responsible choices this Thanksgiving – help protect our community by keeping your gatherings small and if you meet with folks outside your household, please keep your gathering small, wear a mask and observe social distancing as much as possible.

We know this holiday will be different, but we want all of you to be safe and healthy throughout this holiday season. Thank you for doing your part to protect your friends and neighbors.

We are finishing up the 2021 City of Ferndale budget and we want to hear from you! City budgets can be dense documents and we want to get all your questions answered before the City Council has their final public hearing on the budget at the Dec. 7th council meeting.

Latest Downtown Mural Celebrates Local Flora and Fauna

The Ferndale Arts Commission has completed its latest downtown mural and the final one for 2020. The newest piece, titled “Tennant Lake” was painted by local artist Kelly Hoekema and is a celebration of local flora and fauna. It can be found on the side of FrinGe Brewing, facing Alder St.

“I love that I get to be part of a town that truly enjoys the arts.” said Hoekema. This is the fifth mural completed in 2020 and the twelfth mural completed as part of the Downtown Mural Project.

Councilmember Ramon Llanos to Vacate Seat Creating Vacancy on the City Council

Councilmember Ramon Llanos has informed the City that he will be moving outside the City limits at the end of November 2020 and will no longer be able to serve as a City Councilmember effective November 30th. This creates a vacancy on the Ferndale City Council that could be filled as early as Dec. 7th or decided at a later point.

When a vacancy occurs on the City Council, the Council solicits applications for interested members of the public willing to serve and then selects one of those applicants to serve. The appointed member would serve until the 2021 election results are certified at the end of November.  

The City Council will meet and discuss the timeline, process and application materials at their November 16th council meeting starting at 6pm. Application materials will be available on the City website the following day.
