Ferndale Arts Commission Requests Coast Salish Mural Artist for Downtown Ferndale

UPDATE: Deadline for submissions extended to July 9th, 2021.

The Ferndale Arts Commission is calling for a Coast Salish artist to install a mural in downtown Ferndale. Artists are invited to submit designs that they would then install in downtown Ferndale in the summer of 2021. To honor the original caretakers of the area, the FAC wishes to have a mural installed by a Coast Salish artist. The FAC is partnering with the Lhaq’temish Foundation to create a piece of art at Pioneer Park.

Mural is to be installed on the west side of the Pioneer Pavilion. The size will be a minimum of 700sf but could cover the entire side, with the exception of the windows; full side designs are encouraged. All designs will be vetted by the Ferndale Arts Commission and the Lhaq’temish Foundation. 
“The Ferndale Arts Commission has installed 12 murals as part of the Downtown Mural Project since 2018, from a variety of artists and volunteers. Our goal for this mural is to collaborate with a Coast Salish artist to bring this acknowledgement to the Pioneer Pavilion” said Rebecca Xczar, Chairperson of the Ferndale Arts Commission.
Interested artists should submit at least one sketch in color, with height and size preferences, along with any relevant previous experience (pictures of prior murals completed or other art projects).

Ferndale Receives Grant for Skate Park, Construction Slated for 2023

Update 4/22/22: The City, along with New Line Skateparks, is currently working to develop a final project design.  We’re hoping to get that process complete so that bidding and construction can occur so that the park is opened to the public sometime in 2023

The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Board announced the award of a grant to the City of Ferndale for Metalworks Skate Park, a 10,000 square foot skate park facility planned at Pioneer Park.

“This has been something people have been asking about for years,” said Mayor Greg Hansen, “and I’m so excited that we are finally able to make it happen.” The skate park will be located off Second Avenue directly adjacent to the Phillips 66 Sports Complex and within sight of the Star Park playground.

“We chose the name ‘Metalworks Skate Park’ to pay tribute to our industrial roots here in Ferndale and the art and design of the park will reflect that,” said Hansen.

The total grant award is for $480,000 with a portion of the overall project funding to be provided by the City and private donors. Design work will get underway later this summer, with construction anticipated in 2022.

“We are extremely thankful to our delegation in Olympia – Reps. Sharon Shewmake and Alicia Rule and Senator Doug Ericksen for supporting funding for projects such as these,” said Hansen.

Ferndale Police Seek Help Identifying Burglary Suspect

Update 07-02-21: Thanks to the efforts of the community, the suspects in this case have been identified. Thank you everyone for your efforts.

On 6/25/2021, at about 3:51 AM, Ferndale Police were dispatched to Rite Aid located at 5655 Third Avenue for an alarm activation.  Upon arrival, officers discovered that a window had been broken and it appeared that entry had been made.  With the assistance of the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, the area was checked with a K-9 and the interior of the building was searched but the suspects were not located. 

Video surveillance from Rite Aid captured the suspects making entry to the store through the broken window and stealing property inside. 

The Ferndale Police Department is releasing video footage and photographs of the suspects in an attempt to identify them.  If you have any information regarding this case, please contact Detective Eric Grant at 360-483-5739 or egrant@ferndalepd.org.

Traffic Impact EXTENSION: Malloy Avenue closed to all traffic between Calico Loop and Willow Court on Thursday, 6/24 and Friday, 6/25

Malloy Avenue will continue to be closed to all traffic between Calico Loop and Willow Court on Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25. During the closure, northbound thru-traffic will be detoured at Thornton Street and onto Vista Drive and Aldergrove Road. Southbound thru-traffic will be detoured at Aldergrove Road and onto Vista Drive and Thornton Street. Local traffic will be permitted past barriers at Thornton Street and Aldergrove Road, but no traffic will be allowed through the closure area. Details are shown on the attached map.

This closure extension is necessary to repair a preexisting problem that was discovered while doing work on the City’s sanitary sewer system in association with the Pump Station 19 Decommissioning Project. Traffic Impact at Intersection of Shuksan Street & Golden Eagle Drive: Thursday, June 24th, Friday, June 25th, and Monday, June 28th – Friday, July 2nd, from 7AM to 7PM

Drivers should seek alternate routes as the intersection of Shuksan St. & Golden Eagle Dr., will be closed on Wednesday, June 23rd, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. This traffic impact is associated with a private project. Road will remain open during nonworking hours.

Councilmember Herb Porter Receives Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership

This month, Councilmember Herb Porter received his Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.

AWC’s Certificate of Municipal Leadership program recognizes city and town elected officials for accomplishing training in four core areas:
• Roles, responsibilities and legal requirements
• Public sector resource management
• Community planning and development
• Effective local leadership

Those who earn the advanced certificate continue to strive for excellence by attending conferences and trainings, serving their community, and further developing leadership skills. To earn the Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership, Porter completed more than 60 hours of training credits and demonstrated community service.

“Cities and towns around the state are continually transforming in light of changing laws and the need to meet new challenges and opportunities,” said AWC Chief Executive Officer Peter B. King.

This would be the second Ferndale Councilmember currently serving to receive their Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership. Councilmember Ali Hawkinson received her certificate in January 2021.

“Our Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership recognizes mayors and councilmembers who continue to enhance the tools they need today to understand the legal landscape, plan for the future, manage their resources, and foster strong relationships. The elected officials who earn this certificate demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and a desire to bring new ideas back to their community.”
