On Thursday, October 2, 2025, the City of Ferndale officially broke ground on its Civic Campus Project, marking a major milestone in the City’s efforts to provide modern, accessible, and secure facilities that meet the needs of a growing community.

Ferndale Mayor Greg Hansen was joined by members of the Ferndale City Council, Representative Joe Timmons, Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu, and Congressman Rick Larsen. Ferndale’s State and Federal legislative delegation secured $6.75 million for this project across 5 separate grants, about 30 percent of the total project cost.

The two-story, 19,000-square-foot Civic Campus will house City Hall, the Ferndale Municipal Court, City Council Chambers, and administrative offices, bringing essential city services together under one roof. The new facility will replace outdated and undersized spaces, including a Municipal Court previously identified by the Washington State Supreme Court as one of the most deficient courtrooms in the state.

“This is a historic investment in Ferndale’s future,” said Mayor Hansen. “The Civic Campus will provide safe, modern spaces for city services and ensure the heart of our local government can serve the community for decades to come. With the support of our state and federal partners, we are delivering a long-term investment in public access, transparency, and efficiency.”

In addition to improving accessibility and operational efficiency, the project will allow the existing City Hall building to be repurposed as a hub for local nonprofits, including the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce, Community Services, a domestic violence victim’s advocate, and other community partners.

Dawson Construction, selected through a competitive bid process, will serve as the primary contractor. Construction began this fall, with completion anticipated in 2027.
