The Main Street Project

Third Avenue to Washington Street, Ferndale

IN THIS ISSUE:

UPCOMING WORK:

Crews will continue to work on the roadway.  Work planned next week includes lowering a portion of the roadway between Sterling and Hamlin Avenues to improve site distance.

During a portion of the week, Main Street will be gravel in this area.  The roadway will also be ground in preparation for paving, which will follow very quickly (in the next couple of weeks, weather willing).

Work to place railing and seal the walls is also planned as soon as the weather will allow.

Pedestrians are strongly encouraged to utilize alternate routes and not travel through construction zones.

There's a busy week planned for Main Street next week, including roadway excavation, grinding and paving!

Traffic delays are possible and drivers are encouraged to utilize alternate routes.

Main Street Project Update

Work on the Main Street Project is progressing rapidly.  Favorable weather means a busy construction site with multiple concrete, paving and earthwork crews coordinating their efforts to efficiently complete the remainder of the project.

Beginning Monday, April 11th, work will begin to excavate and lower the roadway between Sterling and Hamlin Avenues.  During this period, the asphalt on Main Street will be removed and a new gravel road base will be constructed.  Drivers are warned that during a significant portion of the week, Main Street between Sterling and Hamlin will be gravel.  Grinding is also scheduled for the week of April 11th, where existing sections of asphalt will be planed in preparation for final paving activities.  Since these activities will occur within the driving lanes, it will be necessary to reduce traffic to single lanes with alternating directions of travel, resulting in additional congestion and construction related waits.  Motorists are encouraged to utilize alternate routes to avoid delays.

Improvements

This project includes installation of underground utilities including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, power and telecommunications systems (doesn't it look nice to crest the hill at Hamlin and get a nice view of Mt. Baker and the American flag on the stack at the Carnation Oxford Building on a clear day?)  Narrow sections of the roadway have been widened, with curb, gutter and sidewalk almost completely installed.  Landscaping and new streetlights, similar to those on  Second Avenue will also be installed.
