Planning and Building Department

The Planning and Building Department's areas of responsibility include the preparation, adoption, and implementation of the Ferndale comprehensive plan and to coordinate planning and building services within the City. They also include enforcement of the Uniform Building Code and other construction requirements. The City began development of its GIS and mapping capabilities in 2001, with the development of an internal GIS system by collecting and coordinating mapable data, and producing usable maps for the city. This work has included the construction of an accurate base map for the city and UGA, and development of a Land Information Database tied to the new base map. Development of the GIS and mapping capabilities continue, with the production of a wide variety of thematic maps, increased linkages to other sources of GIS information, refinement of the database, and coordination of an aerial survey to provide the city with up-to-date, high-resolution imagery that can be used to assist all city departments, including Planning, Public Works, Parks, and Police.
