The new Centennial Riverwalk is a celebration of Ferndale's history and heritage and includes three beautiful totems, created by the House of Tears Carvers, under the direction of Master Carver, Jewell
James. They tell the story of Ferndale before it was known as Ferndale, but as the "Jam District" because of the large logjam across the Nooksack River, as well as the traditional Story of Conservation of the Salmon and how the salmon came to the Indian people.
Jewell James has written the Three Ferndale River Story Totem Poles to describe the totems and their historical and cultural significance. The Story of Conservation of the Salmon is also explained through the story of Salmon Woman and Her Children and Bear and the Steelhead, also written by James.
So as you enjoy the new Centennial Riverwalk, please take a moment and pause to consider the wonderful totems that provide a reminder of our city's rich history.
Ferndale Farmers' Market is a small, informal market run by farmers and held at the new Riverwalk Park on the Nooksack River in downtown Ferndale. The market is open on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and runs until October 25th. The market caters to the unique Ferndale perspective - there are no stall fees nor pricing restrictions. Anyone with locally-grown produce or crafts is encouraged to participate. If you are interested in being a vendor, please email ffmjury@yahoo.com or call Andrea Traner at (360) 319-5995.
