After extensive interviews, a public forum and detailed background checks, the City is proud to announce its selection of Kevin Turner as the new Ferndale Police Chief. Turner is currently the Chief of Police for Grantsville, Utah and has been with that department since 2012.
“We were looking for that rare person who possessed the leadership skills, life experience, internal strengths and moral character to lead our police department,” said Mayor Jon Mutchler. “Kevin Turner brought all of that, plus a compassion and humility that will fit well with our Ferndale community.”
All the finalists for the position took part in a public meet and greet on Dec. 12th to allow the community to evaluate their strengths. After that, the candidates met with a diverse panel of interviewers, including active police officers, police guild members, representatives from citizen groups, border patrol, elected officials, and the general public.
Using the input from this process and background checks, the Mayor and City Administrator selected Turner and made a job offer, which he has accepted.
Turner was recognized as the 2016 Police Chief of the Year by the Utah Chiefs of Police Association, has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology and a Masters in Criminal Science. He has served twenty years in law enforcement and currently oversees a police department for a similar-sized community.
“He won’t be Chief Knapp,” said Mutchler, “But he will set a new path of equal respect and accomplishment here in Ferndale and we are happy to have him on board.”
Turner will begin serving as the new Chief of Police in early 2017, provided his contract is approved by the Ferndale City Council.
