Malloy Street Project ~ Summer 2007

Ferndale began construction on its first roundabout in May 2007 in order to improve traffic near Ferndale High School. Improvements will involve reconfiguring the skewed intersections of Vista Drive, Malloy Avenue and Ferndale Terrace. RAM Construction General Contractors, Inc. was awarded the contract to complete this project for their bid price of just over $1.35 Million. Have a look at photos that illustrate the transformation of this area throughout the construction process.

The area between Vista & Malloy is filled.

Vista is flattened so the roundabout can be built.

Material is loaded into a dump truck and hauled away.

A wall separates the raised roadway and FHS parking lot.

Residents talk with traffic control personnel on Vista.

Paving begins, and asphalt is loaded into the paving machine.

The machine places layers (lifts) of asphalt on the road.

Trucks with transfer boxes are used to deliver asphalt.

A total of three lifts of asphalt will be placed.

Tack, a sticky tar, is placed between lifts so they adhere.

Concrete crews complete sidewalks at Shuksan and Vista.

Pedestrians cross through the islands that separate traffic.

A roller compacts the asphalt placed by the paving machine.

Trucks use Vista to transfer trailers of hot asphalt.

While paving occurs near Malloy, concrete sidewalk's poured.

A double drum vibratory roller compacts & smoothes the road.

Crews hand rake asphalt into low areas behind the paver.

The paver moves up Vista to set up the next pass.

After paving, pavement markings and signs are installed.
