Creating Our Economic Development Plan and Downtown Revitalization Plan

Every One Encouraged to Participate

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the future of our community. In fact, the more people we have involved, the more successful will be our efforts and plan. Regardless of your opinion, we really want you to participate. If you are a student, sign up! If you are a senior citizen, sign up! If you are a citizen, sign up! Local business person? SIGN UP! Everyone is encouraged to work with the City to create the economic future of Ferndale. Taking the time to invite everyone to help create a picture of our future is very important work. We need and want all citizens to help do that.. This is going to be a very rewarding project and the results will not sit on the shelf. We intend that the action plans coming out of this process will be implemented. Read more about Board and Commission Effectiveness.

If you are a student in need of a community project, then this is the place for you. If your service club, business or Church is looking for a way to help the community, this is an ideal way for you to serve.

The Economic Viability Steering Committee

Citizens appointed by the Mayor to the Economic Vitality Steering Committee will work with the City's consultant in completing the economic development plan and assist the consultant write and present the final report and action plans. A committee job description is available at City Hall. Information along with the application form required for service on all City Boards and Commissions is available at City Hall. This group will will meet as needed. View the preliminary Report and Recommendations from the community meetings, as developed by the Economic Viability Steering Committee.

The Turn Out Task Force

The Turn Out Task Force (TOTF) will assist the consultant by identifying and implementing those strategies necessary to make sure that every Ferndale citizen knows about the community meetings and is encouraged to attend them. The TOTF will help to set the dates, handle recruiting and publicity and determine the best location for the meetings. A job description for this committee along with an application form is available at City Hall.

Community Meetings

The community meetings will focus on creating a 20 year vision for Ferndale. It is around that vision that the action plan for economic development and downtown revitalization will be created. So, you can see the very serious importance that the City gives to citizen engagement.

New Business License Registration

The City of Ferndale requires all businesses to register and hold a business license. You can file for a business license by contacting the City of Ferndale at (360) 384-4302 or download application forms here.

Business Assistance

The Western Washington University Small Business Development Center staff is available to Ferndale area businesses on a regular schedule at the City Hall Annex. If you need help starting or operating your small business, contact the Small Business Center at (360) 733-4014.

The Whatcom County Library in Ferndale contains many resources for the small business operator as well as access to the internet.
