The Ferndale Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival begins with the Grand Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m. on Hanadori Trail, followed by the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center opening at 10 a.m.

Ferndale Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival 2020

SPRING is the season of our waking world and YOU are invited to rejoice in the natural and cultural wonders of springtime in Japan at the Ferndale Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival 2020 on SATURDAY, MARCH 28th at the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center (2007 Cherry St.).

The City of Ferndale is proud to distinguish itself as the only city from Vancouver, B.C. down the I-5 Corridor to Seattle that hosts a Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival (Sakura Matsuri).

The free gala features delightful interactive entertainment and activities to collectively learn about, honor and celebrate Japanese culture within our immediate and wider community. Purposed for all age groups from preschoolers to elders, fun is a focal point!

Please review the Schedule of Events below and plan on participating in this remarkable celebration of Japanese culture and the fleeting beauty of iconic Japanese cherry blossom trees.

CALL TO QUILTERS

You are invited to submit one or more quilts for display during the Ferndale Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival 2020 on Saturday, March 28th, 2020.

The quilts will be displayed in Pioneer Pavilion Community Center for a stunning visual of your unique art works.

Share your art in this community event that provides experiential opportunities to collectively learn about, honor and celebrate Japanese culture.

Submission Guidelines

  • It is preferred that quilts be made of Japanese fabrics, but not required.
  • Quilts should be sized double bed or smaller.
  • Sleeves are preferred.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Quilts will be judged by festival attendees.
  • First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention Prizes will be awarded.
  • Submission forms and quilts must be dropped off at the Ferndale Library on Thursday, March 5th, 6-7:30 pm or Saturday, March 7th, 10-11:30 am.
  • Prioritization will be given to sequenced submissions due to a large but finite space for display purposes.
  • Quilts may be retrieved Sunday, April 5th, 1-3 pm at the Ferndale Library Meeting Room.

Paranku Craft (Eisa Drum) Workshop
A paranku is a small hand drum used in Eisa dance, a folk dance from the Okinawa Islands in Japan. In this workshop, you’ll make your own paranku drum.

Samurai Undressed Workshop
Get up close and personal with the amazing armor worn by samurai during the Warring States period (c. 1467 – c. 1600). This presentation will briefly introduce these famous warriors of Japan and specifically address the armor and weapons they used. There will be an actual demonstration explaining the various parts of a Japanese suit of armor and how it was worn. Presenter Lynn Shiori Miyauchi, Senior Specialist, Cultural Affairs and Public Outreach, Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle.

12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement) for Children Workshop
Professional Ikebana artist Noriko Sharik will introduce children to the elementary basics of Ikebana, the revered Japanese art of arranging flowers. A demonstration will be given and children will be provided with samples of traditional greenery and flowers to create their own arrangement.

12:45 – 1:30 p.m.

Furoshiki (Japanese Wrapping Cloth) Workshop
A furoshiki is a decorative cloth used in Japan to wrap or carry many kinds of everyday objects. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to wrap a bento box, watermelon, and wine bottles, and how to use it as a shopping bag.

1:30 – 1:45 p.m.

Hip Hop Dance Demonstration
by Harper and I Dance Center

1:45 – 2:30 p.m.
