I-5 Southbound On-Ramp at Main Street Closed Overnight Feb.5-6th

Overnight maintenance to close on-ramp of I-5 in Ferndale, starting Feb. 5

FERNDALE – Travelers in the local area and along southbound Interstate 5 should plan for an overnight closure of the on-ramp at Main Street exit (milepost 262.5), beginning Saturday, Feb. 5. Crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the southbound on-ramp to complete guardrail repairs.

What travelers can expect:

  • From 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 to 5 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, the southbound Main Street exit on-ramp will be closed at milepost 262.5.
  • A signed detour will be in place for drivers looking to access southbound I-5 from Main Street. Drivers will be directed to use an alternate route; south on Pacific Highway, Slater Road to southbound I-5 interchange at 260.

Ferndale Homicide Suspect Arrested in Arizona

Miguel-Angel Miranda was arrested on Friday, January 28th in Phoenix, Arizona in connection with the recent Ferndale shooting and homicide on January 23rd.

The vehicle that Miranda was believed to be in was initially picked up by a license plate reader outside Kingsman, Arizona which alerted the Ferndale Police Department. Ferndale detectives, with the assistance of detectives from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, worked to quickly develop information on possible addresses for all known associates of Miranda in the greater Phoenix area.

Using this information, the Phoenix Police Department spotted Miranda and subsequently took him into custody. The associated vehicle was later located in Ogden, Utah.

Miranda has prior court cases in Phoenix to resolve and then will be transported to Whatcom County to face charges of second-degree murder.

Currently, the Ferndale Police Department is seeking information about two witnesses to the initial shooting on January 23rd. Their names are Jimmy Abitia and Michael Archouletta. On 01/23/2022 shortly after midnight, the Ferndale Police responded to a report of a shooting at a large party. Responding officers located a victim on the ground outside who had sustained two gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to the hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

An arrest warrant has been issued for as MIGUEL ANGEL MIRANDA (06/13/1998) in connection with this homicide.  He was last seen in a white 2010 Acura, Washington License BYD1918, with dark tinted windows and black wheels. The police department is seeking the public’s help in locating Miguel Miranda and the vehicle involved. Miranda is considered armed and dangerous.

City Council Unanimously Endorses Ferndale School Levy

Ferndale City Council unanimously endorses a YES vote on the Ferndale School District Operations Levy

At their last meeting, the City Council was united in their support for this measure.
“Ferndale students benefit intellectually, emotionally, and physically when these resources and programs are funded. We have a proud history in sports, the arts, and education. Let’s continue to fund these activities that make Ferndale special. As a diverse and non-partisan City Council, we ask that all Ferndale voters approve the Ferndale School District Replacement Levy. Ferndale Seeks Input on Design of New Skatepark with Public Meeting Jan. 26th

Calling all skaters and riders, the City of Ferndale wants to hear from you! The City is holding a live webinar to help design Metalworks Skatepark on January 26th at 6PM to gather input on what features would work best for a skate/bmx/scooter facility in Ferndale.

New Line Skateparks, an internationally renowned skatepark design and construction team, will be collecting the feedback and transforming it into a plan so that construction can get underway later this year.

“How do we make an awesome skatepark for Ferndale? Simple. We ask the people who are going to use it and have the best designers make it happen,” said Mayor Greg Hansen. “This is your opportunity to tell us what would work and what wouldn’t.”

City Offices Closed Monday Jan. 17th for MLK, Jr Day

City offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 17th in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr Day. The regularly scheduled council meeting will instead be held on Tuesday, Jan. 18th at 5PM.

The City asks all residents to reflect on the life and work of Dr. King during this time. As he said speaking after the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, “We have before us the glorious opportunity to inject a new dimension of love into the veins of our civilization . . . freedom and justice through love.” If you have a moment, reflect on his words and what they mean for you as we enter this new year.

Civil Engineering Services

The City of Ferndale is seeking qualification statements from Professional Engineering firms with experience providing Plans, Specifications and Engineering Services for the Pump Station # 15 Decommissioning Project.

This project decommissions the existing pump station (including wet well), upgrades existing telemetry systems to other pump stations in the area, and installs approximately 590 linear feet of new 8” PVC gravity main from the manhole (MH 3701) upstream of the existing pump station to an existing gravity manhole west on West Smith Rd. The City of Ferndale is seeking qualification statements from Professional Engineering firms with experience providing design services, up to and possibly including sewer; surveying; electrical and telemetry systems; geotechnical investigation, studies, and services; as well as the creation of plans, specifications and estimates; construction management, construction engineering, and inspection services for the Pump Station #15 Decommissioning Project.

This project is along Main Street, from Barrett Road then easterly to the City Limits and will improve pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular safety. Reconstruction includes widening the roadway to current standards, construction of ADA sidewalks, ramps, and WTA bus pullouts and installation of a new illumination system. Stormwater will be treated and detained.  Sanitary sewer and water utilities will be upgraded and replaced as necessary to meet current standards.
